IBMCognos TM1 (formerly Applix TM1, formerly Sinper TM/1[1]) is enterprise planning software used to implement collaborative planning, budgeting and forecasting solutions, as well as analytical and reporting applications. Data in IBM Cognos TM1 is stored and represented as multidimensional OLAPcubes, with data being stored at the 'leaf' level. Computations on the leaf data are performed in real-time (for example, to aggregate numbers up a dimensional hierarchy). IBM Cognos TM1 includes a data orchestration environment for accessing external data and systems, as well as capabilities designed for common business planning and budgeting requirements (e.g. workflow, top-down adjustments).
The idea of TM1 was initially inspire by Exxon’s Lily Whaley and the initial prototype was developed by her colleague at the time Manny Perez for the mainframe. When Visicalc was released, Perez decided this was the best UI for his system, and with his friend Jose Sinai formed the Sinper Corporation in early 1983 and released his initial product, TM/1 (the 'TM' in TM1 stands for 'Table Manager'). Sinper was purchased by Applix in 1996, which was purchased by Cognos in late 2007, which was in itself then purchased shortly thereafter by IBM.[2] Several new features were added to IBM Cognos TM1 9.5, the most visible being TM1 Contributor, which combines an OLAP engine with the enterprise planning capabilities of IBM Cognos Planning in a Web-based client. Other features include an 'Undo/Redo' capability that lets users store a collection of data value changes and walk back through the actions to undo them; pick lists for cells to reduce the amount of data entry performed; sandboxes for creating personal modeling scenarios; and data entry shortcuts.
Another Web client option for IBM Cognos TM1 is IBM Cognos TM1 Web, which enables business users to develop and publish web-based applications, using Microsoft Excel as an authoring medium. IBM Cognos TM1 Web is developed in ASP.NET (until TM1 10.2 where it is rewritten on the Java platform), and is compatible with Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
With its flagship TM1 product line, Applix was the purest OLAP vendor among publicly traded independent BI vendors prior to OLAP industry consolidation in 2007, and had the greatest growth rate.[3][4]
The latest version, IBM Cognos TM1 10.2 became publicly available on September 10, 2013.
Real-Time Access to Your Cognos and TM1 Data. DataClarity employs powerful data virtualization capabilities that empower users with easy self-service access to Cognos Packages, TM1 Cubes, and TM1 Cube Views to make live data instantly available in Tableau, Power BI, and many others. Data in IBM Cognos TM1 is stored and represented as multidimensional OLAP cubes, with data being stored at the 'leaf' level. Cognos TM1 is also referred to by IBM as Financial Performance Management FPM. It's an in-memory MOLAP cube application with real-time rules calculation. As it provides end-user writeback it's often used by the Office of Finance for budgeting and modelling - therefore the MS Excel interface is frequently used. Then you can construct a Cognos TM1 Application to manage workflow of that data such as contributing to a plan or reviewing changes. The Cognos TM1 Applications portal is the launch pad for the activity around the application. It is managed by the Cognos TM1 Applications server which provides the web access to the applications. From November 2016 IBM added TM1 to Planning Analytics packages and re-branded it to Planning Analytics Workspace (PAw) and Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel (PAx). The last one was known as CAFE as Cognos TM1 and BI client.
